Hello, my name's Lee and this website follows the ups and downs of owning a 1979 Air Portable Land Rover.
Together with my girlfriend Diane we purchased the Landy a couple of years or so ago to give me something to mess about with on my weekends and something different for Diane to drive during the week, having been introduced to the joys of Land Rover ownership by my girlfriends family who owned a standard series III
After a couple of outings in a local disused quarry I was hooked on these vehicles and up until this point I wouldn't have believed the places you could take these vehicles or the stuff you could do with them. My addiction was further compounded by spectating at various extreme trials events and seeing the amount of abuse these vehicles could take and how deep you could burry one in mud and escape (albeit, sometimes with the aid of a winch!)
I was quite happy with the state of the Landy as I had bought it until I managed to ground it on the gearbox mid cross member whilst off-roading in the quarry. On inspection i found that the cross member had basically fallen apart due to rust, further inspection revealed that quite a lot of the chassis was suffering from the same fate.
Not being one to do things by half I decided to replace the entire chassis rather than just patch it up . . . . .
. . . so begins the saga of restoring our Landy!
