The steering relay was one of those
parts that I forgot about until late on in the project. when I came to
connect the steering arms I found the relay to be really stiff. I decided
to remove it and replace it, either with my original or with a new part.
Removal was a pain in the ass. The corrosion between the relay and the chassis had welded it solidly in place and it wouldn't budge. The solution was to put the trolley jack under the relay and jack up the front end of the Landy. The weight of the engine, copious amounts of WD-40 and a large lump hammer eventually managed to free the old relay.

As
the steering box had been leaking from the seal where the drop arm exits the
box i decided to change the seal and make sure everything else was ok in the
box as well. On opening the box I found that the oil was very old and contaminated with water so expected the worst. Worryingly, I also found a load of small ball bearings in the oil that didn't look like they had come out of the box. On cleaning all the parts I didn't find enough wear to warrant replacing any items and none of the bearings were missing or damaged. This leads me to conclude that whoever filled up the box the last time must have used some old nasty oil that had a load of old bearings in it! Just waiting for replacement seals and gaskets then it will be rebuilt. |
